Hey dudes,

A couple people have asked me how to go about copyrighting their music, so I've decided to share my knowledge on the subject. This information could easily be used to copy other forms of work, such as copyrighting your poetry, copyrighting your art, copyrighting your screen plays, etc.

Disclaimer

Before we begin, here is a legal disclaimer: This blog, and pretty much everything I say, write, and do, comes with no warranty, and is at your own risk. If you follow my advice, you are solely responsible for anything that happens, even if I've given totally incorrect/idiotic/spiteful/etc information. Use at your own risk! You've been warned!

Third Party Verification

Okay for starters, a lot of people always think they can simply mail themselves a package via registered mail, and keep it in a safe. The reasoning is that this would be proof that you were in possession of your music at a certain date, thereby enforcing copyright. [...]

2 Billion Fake Views on Youtube - Perception is Reality

Busted!

LOL hey dudes... have you heard about this? According to the Huffington post, Youtube just removed over 2 billion fake views from their system, mostly belonging to Universal Music and Sony/BMG artists... yeah... major labels haha.

Some of you are probably already on board with the fact that everyone embellishes, especially larger companies. Hell even I embellish (of course, duh), but then a lot of times I'm not even trying to and my website does it for me... people will email me like "Oh Mike yay you're such a success" and I'm like "Are we talking about the same me?" haha. I end up having to explain this every once in awhile. [...]

DUI Checkpoints

Something has been bugging me lately and I'd like to write about it for a second here. It's about people who announce DUI checkpoints.

Back in the day, I use to go out to bars a lot, and as such was frequently around the type of person who would announce to his friends when there was a DUI checkpoint somewhere along the way home. Although I never made those announcements myself, at the time I saw it as a noble thing to do - to save your friends from going to jail, getting a huge fine, and something on their record, missing work, being hassled, totally ruining their night, etc etc etc. This was all with the thought in mind that anyone who was actually too drunk to drive, wouldn't, and everyone else was a much better driver while mildly intoxicated than the law would recognize, or that the blood alcohol level measure was faulty or something. Your Friends Are Not Your Fans

Categories: Mouth Diarrhea

... but your fans can become your friends! Haha I had to throw that one in real quick in case any of you started getting angry with me before even reading this.

I'm just sitting here up late again and thinking about the whole 'being a musician in LA' thing, and it occurred to me that I might be able to help others by explaining my outlook on this particular phenomenon. Maybe I'll help some people get more effective at finding fans, or waste less time, or maybe even understand why they're not going anywhere. Anyway, if you're a musician, comedian, artist, etc etc, then maybe this blog is for you.

I know it sucks

You guys, I know it sucks. There are too many musicians, competing for too little "high profile" venues. I get that. It sucks, but I know its true. Lots of musicians still dream of "getting discovered" (aka: Lotto Scratchers), so they'll play for free and bend over backwards to please a venue to get the gigs they want, and the supply and demand of it all jacks everything up. Hey dudes, I just had a quick thought and wanted to blog it for you. You know how the best part about capitalism is all the competition? And you know how in reality, competition kind of sucks right now because each market usually has very few real/true players in it, when there should be hundreds (ie: cellphone carriers, computer manufacturers, tv/blueray-player manufacturers, streaming media vendors, email providers, grocery stores, etc etc etc)?

It's all our fault.

We're the ones who choose to buy from the largest companies, because on some level, we believe we can trust them more, or their products are superior. Yet if we step back, we can also logically recognize that a larger company is more capable of silently screwing us over behind the scenes and getting away with it. We also know that larger companies have larger advertising budgets, which equates to an influence on our decision making process. Studies have shown somewhat conclusively that most people believe they are smarter than advertisements, but at the same time most people are still susceptible to their messages. [...]

Fuck You, Instagram

Oh, the silliness of it all

Quick rant of the day. Instagram just announced that they now have the right to sell your photos, without compensation or restriction, to 3rd parties. If you recall, this is generally the same thing that caused a mass exodus from twitpic back in the day.

Some people are on instagram's side, taking a sarcastic tone with a general sentiment of "So this company that I use absolutely for free is trying to make money? Oh how DARE they!!", but I feel like they're not seeing the whole picture.

For one, of course companies should try to make money off their 'free' products, but there are much better and more creative ways to do it. For one, instagram is now pushing their main web interface more (don't even get me started), and ad supported websites are historically proven to work (provided you have traffic, which instagram does/will). Not to mention promoted 'whatevers' (like promoted tweets, or facebook's promoted posts), selling anonymous data, API fees, and on and on and on. [...]

Finals Are Over (Joy)

Follow the White Rabit, Neo

Well finals for school are over, and I'm pretty sure I passed both History and Philosophy. I almost blew it with both of those classes when I accidentally failed to turn in a major essay ... for both, LOL.

In my defense, my history teacher is a stickler for all that 'online assignments' stuff, where you log into the school's website, and you get to see your grades and assignments and things. Anyway the day of my midterm, I double and triple checked it for assignments, because I felt like I was forgetting something. Nothing else was posted so I came into class and then quickly realized my grade was going to have a big giant red -50 points for being a dumbass and forgetting the take home essay. I guess I should have written it down when he verbally assigned it the week before. Anyway, I pulled my grade back up from a D- to a C by the final, so unless I blew that, I should be coo. [...]

Ted Mosby is a Jerk

How I Met Your Mother
-Cast of How I Met Your Mother

I'm totally procrastinating my history paper again, but I have almost 18 hours until its due.... so.... lets talk about How I Met Your Mother!!!

Okay so first off, I was just going to title this blog "How I Met Your Mother", until when I went to use google to spell check "Mosby", I came across a cute little site: http://tedmosbyisajerk.com. LOL. So silly. Alright anyway.

So tell me if you feel this way or this makes sense to you. When I first was watching the show, it was mostly just re-runs, so I didn't digest a large coherent view of everything that was going on, and for the longest time I thought that most of the show was about the on/off romance of Ted Mosby and Robin, and that eventually they would end up together. I know I know, they already said Robin wasn't the mom; She was Aunt Robin... but hear me out: The narrator has already played tricks on the kids before, when Ted met some stripper and then said "And kids that's how I met your mother... just kidding!". It seems entirely possible to me that the entire show could be a trick, and perhaps at the end the narrator (Bob Saget) would say "Alright kids remember your Aunt Robin from the story? That's actually your mother. I wanted to see if you would be rooting for her the entire time" or something. [...]

Lagarith Rocks

So uh. I've been doing a lot of video editing lately, of course (for the music video I'm trying to release soon), and I've had to relearn several huge concepts, and discover some new ones. The major thing on my mind right now is something called "Intermediate Codecs" more or less. Basically, you know how you watch a movie file on your computer? And you know how the file size is all small-ish and compressed and stuff, while still looking good? That's called a delivery codec... basically your movie/pics are compressed to be as small as possible while still looking good, so your hard drive doesn't fill up too fast, or so your browser can download it somewhat quickly.

The thing about delivery codecs, though, is that they take a huge hit in quality when they're rendered. You usually don't notice... but say you had to render something several times, like for instance with what I'm doing - I have to render my video files once to add some motion stabilization and some noise reduction, another after the files have been edited into the actual video, and a 3rd time after I try to color grade them. After 3 renders, the quality starts to look really crappy. Its like a copy of a copy of a copy. And if I were to add special effects and stuff, there would be even more intermediate renders required, especially when you consider that there are many special FX programs that do different things that you might have to use.
